Being Lead Up The Garden Path!

You have hopefully now got a feel for the curious Cornish conundrums that are those phantom phenomena we call paths. In particular, the tenuous relationship between the marking of the path and its actual location.

Good. 'Cos you're going to need to take a few leaps of faith hither and thither. F'r instance, we arrive at 6 on map:-

Here the OS Map indicates the presence of footpaths and verily the sign seems to confirm it but ..... Walk from St. Ives to the Engine Inn, Cripplesease 19
..... the arrows on the sign point up and down the road, at 90 degrees to the expected direction of the path. Nor, in deed, is a path much in evidence. Walk from St. Ives to the Engine Inn, Cripplesease 20

The path is actually up these peeps drive but if you didn't have the courage of your convictions (or, as we did, the benefit of insider information) you'd probably never find it.

Locals resort to trench warfare in an attempt to stave off the hordes of emmets! Walk from St. Ives to the Engine Inn, Cripplesease 21

Keep to the left and follow the path up to a stile at the top of the garden.

Which should appear thusly. Walk from St. Ives to the Engine Inn, Cripplesease 22
Negotiate the clashing bushes ..... Walk from St. Ives to the Engine Inn, Cripplesease 23
..... and you arrive at this little pile o' rocks.

You just keep going straight on but standing on top of them does provide a useful vantage point.

To the left you will see the 'castle' ..... Walk from St. Ives to the Engine Inn, Cripplesease 25
..... and to the right a chimbley, which will assume some importance later on.

Remember it's face!

You should then emerge in this (occasionally cow-infested) field. Walk from St. Ives to the Engine Inn, Cripplesease 27
There is a handy marker, which handily marks the fact that you can turn left (to the 'castle') or go straight on to t'pub).

Guess which one we chose!

Ignore the gate(way)s in the fields and aim for the little gaps in the hedgerows ..... Walk from St. Ives to the Engine Inn, Cripplesease 29
..... which have the traditional Cornish granite cattle grids in them. Walk from St. Ives to the Engine Inn, Cripplesease 30
Be warned. Access for disabled persons is not ideal! Walk from St. Ives to the Engine Inn, Cripplesease 31
You eventually emerge onto a 'crossroads' with a wider pathway [7 on map].

If you turn left that brings you up on to the main road but if you go straight across .....
