Ok. So, we've done Lelant. Time to head back and see some of things we missed
on the way out .....
What?
What do you mean what about Hayle?
Don't be silly. Look, if you want to walk all the way to Hayle that's your
funeral. Just follow the road out of Lelant, then head left and out along the
causeway (dodging flying traffic). You'll eventually reach you know where.
Believe me, Hayle is a place that is best appreciated from a distance.
|
That's Hayle, OK? Wasn't worth it, was it? |
Meanwhile back on the coast path, where it runs between The Hayle
Estuary and the West Cornwall Golf Course, we discover that we aren't the only
people fleeing Hayle.
|
US Marine Riverine gunboats patrol the entrance to Hayle,
longing for the good old days on the Mekong Delta when life was a lot less
dangerous. |
|
Then, seeing their chance as the harbour defences are left
temporarily unsecured, they gun their engines and try to make a break for
St. Ives Bay and freedom! |
Remember that stretch of water between Porth Kidney and Hayle beach you
thought you could just wade across?
Well, I did warn you that there is a deep channel in it to let the boats in
and out. Mind you, what with shifting tides and sands it can be a bit of an art
form negotiating it! Involving only marginally less manoeuvring than a four wide
receiver set from the shotgun on fourth and twenty, we proudly present the Hayle
Bar fandango!
Start wide left ... |
|
... straighten up a tad ... |
|
... jag sharp right for the centre ... |
|
... head wide right ... |
|
... line up the end zone ... |
|
... then straighten up and head for the posts. |
|
Ironically, the one thing you don't want out of all this manoeuvring is a
touchdown otherwise you will be stuck there for quite some time before the tide
will float you off!
